Velvet Monkey are the ambitious and dynamic team behind THIRTY NINE’s hair studio. Offering the latest techniques in hair styling, Velvet Monkey are at the forefront of new trends discovered on their travels between Europe’s fashion weeks, Monaco and the Netherlands.
We caught up with Eduard, one half of the talented duo to find out what inspires him to be the best.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
From the very beginning- and as far back as I can remember- hairdressing was always my passion. I’ve always had this interest in fashion and my parents supported me in this in every possible way. This led to me experimenting at a very early age with hair.
What is your proudest moment to date?
One of my proudest personal achievements was winning the Wella Trend Vision award at the age of 19. I was the youngest ever contestant to win the award. On a professional front, my biggest boost is Velvet Monkey. Within a very short period of time, we have opened 2 salons internationally, and we’ve worked worldwide for designers, magazines and catwalk fashion shows.
Who/what inspires you?
I get my inspiration by travelling and visiting as many cities as possible. Simply walking through the streets inspires me, because people watching can be a real source of information. I feel that to discover new cultures is to enrich one’s life.
If you could have dinner with anyone (dead/alive) who would it be?
Without a doubt, it would be my father who sadly passed away. I know he would be a proud man now. I know it was his passing that gave me the drive to be where I am today and to put my focus on work and achievement .... thanks dad!
What do you like to do when not working? How do you switch off?
Hairdressing isn’t a 9 to 5 job for me. At any time, in any place, and in any city, I could be inspired. My relaxation involves finding that buzz in a new city- it fills me with loads of creative ideas.
What are your hobbies/interests?
To be honest, my work, developing our business and our team is my hobby. I find it wonderful that sometimes work and hobbies can be mixed to become a great form of enjoyment!
What is the most embarrassing things that’s ever happened to you?
At one of my first shows in San Francisco, I stood on stage in front of 3000 hairdressers. I was concentrating on my story, pacing the stage, not realising I was near the edge and eventually fell off it! I climbed back up to a loud applause and we all had a good laugh about it.
Where is the best place you have ever visited?
Without a doubt California. The people are great, the scenery is beautiful- in fact I just loved everything about California.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?
I’m not quite sure! I’d want to see Velvet Monkey become an international brand, and build bridges between marketing, sales and an education platform for the hairdressing trade.
What are you most looking forward to about THIRTY NINE’s opening?
The challenge. Bringing our vision to Monaco. Building the team into a force to be reckoned with. Delivering a level of service and quality that Monaco hasn’t seen yet. I am really looking forward to introducing the wider public to the Velvet Monkey passion and vision.
How would you best describe the THIRTY NINE concept?
Only the best is good enough. THIRTY NINE will propose an eye opening experience for its members regarding fashion, style, design, beauty and health. Real beauty starts from within and with the help of 39 we shall bring that beauty for all to see and admire.
